If your next date is going to take place in New York, you better break out the piggy bank, as new research reveals hopeless (or hopeful!) romantics spend a whopping $297.27 trying to woo a potential partner.
According to Match.com‘s annual Singles in America survey – which polled 5,000 people across the country about the cost of an average date night – the Big Apple tops every other state in the US when it comes to a pricey night of romance.
But while New York is known for being an expensive area, Twitter users were floored to see that the cost of a rendez vous in South Dakota would set them back only $38.
Pricey: The average cost of date night in each state has been revealed and people are shocked at the disparity between expensive areas like New York versus the mid-West (stock image)
Cha ching! A night of romance in New York will set singles back by a staggering $297.27 – far above the national average of $102.32
The study showed that the average cost of a date in the United States is $102.32, based on the price of a dinner for two, a bottle of wine and two movie tickets.
When an infographric with the prices made its way to Twitter, thanks to a Silicone Valley-based economist with the handle @NinjaEconomics, people were shocked to see the difference in breakdowns from state to state.
The least expensive state for a date night is South Dakota, with a reported median cost of $38.27.
This revelation shocked social media users, who speculated how the cost could be so low.
‘If we move to South Dakota, I’m taking you out every night,’ a male user tweeted his significant other.
South Dakota fan club: Social media users joked they were moving to the least populous state in America in time for their next date night
Others joked that they were moving to the affordable state – which is also the least populous in America, with some 880,000 residents.
The other states rounding out the places with the cheapest date nights were neighboring North Dakota ($42.43), Nebraska ($48.91), Iowa ($50.90) and Wyoming ($52.10).
Those tabs certainly seem minuscule when you consider the other end of the spectrum, with a night of romance costing $259.60 in New Jersey, $239.95 in Hawaii, $230.34 in Connecticut and $226.35 in California.
It’s no surprise that some Twitter users joked that they were ‘too cheap’ to date after looking at the associated costs.
LOL: There was lots of jokes to be made about the extravagance of dates in areas like New York, Hawaii, New Jersey and California
Unattainable: Twitter users had lots of thoughts – some sarcastic – about the future of their dating lives after seeing the often extortionate costs
Many people debated the costs and how reflective they were on the average Joe and Jane.
A woman living in New York said she has never spent close to $297 on a night out with her husband.
‘What do these people do when they go on dates???’ asked one incredulous commenter.
‘I think I am going to start a #Gofundme so I can date again,’ wrote another.
And proving that it’s not all about spending a lot of money to impress, a California-based user said he married his now-wife four years after their first date, which cost him the price of a bottle of Sprite.
Cute: A user said the date that would introduce him to his wife cost just the price of a soda ten years ago
Debate: The thread caused a bit of a stir, as people were skeptical as to how accurate the average costs of a date night in their home states supposedly were
